The old princely capital has five hotel areas, and only two of them put you within walking distance of the Qila or a decent plate of Patiala-style meat.
Mall Road and the Baradari Gardens edge
Patiala's Mall Road runs from Sheranwala Gate down past Baradari Gardens toward the polo ground. Hotels along this axis — Hotel Narain Continental, Green's Hotel, and a few smaller mid-range properties — run ₹2,800 to ₹5,500. You are within ten minutes on foot of the Baradari, fifteen of Qila Mubarak, and five of the main sit-down restaurants in the Chotti Baradari area.
This is the correct answer for a first visit. The old walled city, the Sheesh Mahal, the Moti Bagh Palace and the polo club are all reachable without a cab. Rickshaws to the bus stand or railway station cost ₹80 and take twelve minutes. What you sacrifice is modern hotel finish — the properties here are 1990s-vintage refreshes rather than new builds, and the pools are unheated. For heritage-city atmosphere at a fair price, this is where to book.

Yes, if you have any interest in Sikh history, princely architecture, or Punjabi music. Patiala rewards a full day and evening — Qila Mubarak, Sheesh Mahal, and dinner in the old city. It doesn’t reward a two-hour lunch stop. Book Mall Road for a proper visit.
About 65 kilometres, roughly ninety minutes on the Rajpura-Chandigarh road on a normal day. Perfectly manageable as a day trip in either direction. If your priority is Chandigarh sightseeing plus a Patiala visit, base in Chandigarh and day-trip. If Patiala is the focus, reverse it.
The main palace complexes — Qila Mubarak, Moti Bagh, Sheesh Mahal — are museums and government spaces, not hotels. Heritage stays in Patiala are in private kothis and havelis, not the palaces themselves. Don’t confuse Patiala with Rajasthan on this — the model here is different.
